The Vision Behind the Tour
The Clay County Mural Tour was envisioned by community leaders and town officials who aimed to make art accessible and instill pride in local neighborhoods. This Tour aims to create murals across small towns, reflecting each community’s history, culture, and spirit. This project beautifies public spaces, tells town stories, fosters community pride, and encourages tourism and economic growth. By using large-scale artwork, this Tour connects different communities and highlights each town’s unique character.
Throughout community conversations held in the county, it became apparent the county was separated into “silos” that must be addressed through relationship building. When people are involved in their community, supportive connections are formed, resulting in thriving and flourishing towns. Thus, the Mural Tour was created to connect communities throughout the county through Arts and Culture.
The Importance of Arts and Culture in Communities
Arts and creativity belong in every community. Studies show that arts and creativity improve Hoosiers’ health and wellbeing and generates economic benefits. According to a study by the Knight Foundation*, quality of life matters in people’s decisions to move or stay, and it drives how attached they feel to where they live. Additionally, neighborhoods with more arts activities see increases in housing, population and school test scores along with a decrease in crime.
Community Engagement and Participation
The heart of the Clay County Mural Tour is its community-driven approach. Local residents participate in planning and creating each mural, ensuring the artworks reflect the community’s vision and values. With their input, the artist can create a mural that residents will have pride in.
