Fund Purpose:

The Rachel Marie Romas Memorial Scholarship Fund provides a scholarship to a student, from a county served by the Wabash Valley Community Foundation, who intends to pursue a Bachelor or Master’s degree at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and whose application demonstrates a record of community engagement or community service.  Preference should be given to those with leadership experience within a community service group.

Fund Story:

Rachel Marie Romas loved her community, friends, family, and dogs with a fierce passion. She invested her life in making her community a better place and making those who met her better people.

Rachel worked hard to make the community better for all who live and work here. She volunteered for many organizations including: Relay for Life, Bowl for Kid’s Sake, Big Brother Big Sister, Altrusa, Dancing With The Terre Haute Stars, Board of Directors for the Wabash Valley Community Foundation and the Popcorn Festival Committee.

Rachel believed in the importance of education, graduating from Northview then attending Saint Mary of the Woods College for both her undergrad and Master’s degrees.

Rachel was diagnosed with Wilms Tumor of the Kidney at the age of four, and had been in remission for 27 years before her recent diagnosis. She passed away on February 7, 2017, following a short battle with Acute Lymphoblastic T-Cell Lymphoma.

This scholarship has been established to preserve her memory and assist accepted students of the Woods to follow in her footsteps of community engagement and leadership.
