The League of Terre Haute has had the privilege of educating and providing assistance to the children of Vigo County since 1928. The League’s mission focuses on providing clothing assistance, dental supplies, and emergency dental services to the children of Vigo County.
The League’s Clothes Closet program addresses children’s clothing needs within the Vigo County School Corporation. School nurses and health assistants support the program by identifying children who are in need. Basic clothing needs are promptly met by Clothes Closet volunteers. With every order of clothing, the League sends new clothing, which includes seven pairs of socks, seven pairs of underwear, two pairs of jeans, two pairs of sweatpants, two sweatshirts, two short-sleeved shirts, two long-sleeved shirts, a hat, a pair of gloves, and a winter coat. The League of Terre Haute provides clothing annually for approximately 500 children from kindergarten through seniors in high school.
The League’s Dental Education Program reaches every child in the Vigo County School Corporation, preschool through fifth grade, as well as local day cares. The League of Terre Haute provides instructional resources for each classroom throughout the month of February to teach proper dental care. Each child is given a new toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss. For some children in the county, this will be the only toothbrush they will receive. The League purchases nearly 9,000 toothbrushes, toothpaste, and packets of floss to be distributed to students each year.
The League’s Extended Services program provides emergency dental treatment to children whose families are financially unable to address dental problems. Referrals are accepted and reviewed throughout the year and are extended to all school age children. With the assistance of school nurses, the League is able to identify and focus on the critical dental needs of children. Volunteers work with local dentists to provide prompt and professional dental care to children who are in pain due to cavities and broken or chipped teeth, as well as other extenuating circumstances.
