The Community Foundation recently distributed grants totaling more than $977,000 to approximately 130 area nonprofit organizations in Clay, Sullivan and Vigo counties.
The grants are the annual distribution generated from endowment funds that donors have designated for specific organizations. Known as designated funds, these endowments were established either by donors or the organization itself to provide annual income to the nonprofits.
“These funds are an important part of ensuring sustainability for these nonprofit organizations. Donations to these funds are invested and the proceeds from those investments provide an ongoing, reliable stream of income to the charitable organizations for which the funds were created,” said Beth Tevlin, president and CEO of the Wabash Valley Community Foundation.
The key, Tevlin added, is that the principal in each fund is not touched and remains invested, thereby providing a permanent stream of income for the nonprofit.
“This is a great way for donors who are passionate about the work of a specific organization to support the nonprofit’s efforts now and into the future. It provides a way for them to remain connected to the mission of the nonprofit forever,” she added.
The Community Foundation continually monitors the funds to ensure they honor the individual’s philanthropic intent. The nonprofit organizations benefit from the Community Foundation’s ability to invest and manage the endowed funds and provide the resources to facilitate complex forms of giving including planned gifts, gifts of appreciated stock or real estate and other types of giving.
“The grants provide vital funding to help grow and sustain these nonprofits and ensure that the critical services they provide continue in these communities. These grants are utilized in a variety of ways by the organization based upon the donors’ wishes, which may include staffing, supplies, utilities, facility improvements and other needs they face,” said Tevlin.
Contributions of any size may be added to any of these endowment funds to support a specific cause or agency. Unlike grants from unrestricted endowment funds, these funds are not open to receive applications.
