Sullivan County Park and Lake has needed dredging for many years, and it looks like 2025 is the year that it is finally going to become a reality. For those unfamiliar with dredging, it is an essential part of lake maintenance that makes aquatic ecosystems safer and more enjoyable for recreation. Dredging is also a preventative measure to keep it free of debris so that boats can move freely and unimpeded.
Regular lake dredging is important because it helps maintain water quality by removing accumulated sediment, debris, and excess nutrients from the lake bottom, which can otherwise lead to poor oxygen levels, excessive plant growth, and a decline in aquatic life; it also helps preserve fish habitats, improve recreational activities like boating, and can even mitigate the spread of contaminants in the water body by removing sediments.
